Record-breaking interest in future district heating and cooling

The interest from researchers and industry in 4th generation district heating and smart energy systems is growing. The 4DH Research Centre has received a record-breaking 110 abstracts for this year’s conference on 4DH and smart energy systems in September.

This is a substantial growth from last year, where around 70 abstracts were received. Consequently, the Research Centre is expecting 250-300 visitors discussing future district heating and smart energy systems at the conference this year. This makes it the biggest academic conference on district heating in Europe in 2016, notes Sven Werner, part of 4DH’s management group and Professor at Halmstad University.

Growing industry focus

The abstracts come from researchers and industry from 20 different countries, the most popular subject being “Future district heating production and systems” with “Smart Energy Systems”, “Energy planning and planning tools”, and “Low-temperature district heating and buildings” as runners-up.

The interest from the industry in future district heating and smart energy systems has also doubled since last year with 20 abstracts in the industrial category.

- We are very satisfied with the growing interest from researchers and industry in the future of district heating and smart energy systems. This is a part of a tendency we have also seen in the European Commission’s new strategy for heating and cooling and holistic take on the energy system. I think more and more people are realizing how integration of the energy sectors and a future district heating system with effective use of renewables propose some sustainable solutions to a lot of the challenges we have with going 100 % renewable, said Henrik Lund, Head of 4DH.

The 2nd International Conference on Smart Energy Systems and 4th Generation District Heating takes place in Aalborg, Denmark on 27-28 September 2016. Register for the conference here.
